UPSL Announces Midwest Expansion with Des Moines United FC

Des Moines, IA based Club Joins Midwest Conference for 2021 Spring Season

July 6, 2020 – Los Angeles, CA – The United Premier Soccer League (UPSL) is pleased to announce Des Moines United FC as its newest Division I member.

Based in Des Moines, IA, Des Moines United FC will begin UPSL play in the 2021 Spring Season as part of the Midwest Division I. The club will host its UPSL home games in compliance with UPSL National Division I standards.

UPSL Midwest Conference Manager Robert Brinkman said, "Des Moines United FC has a proven track record on the futsal court. Now they're going outside and we're pleased to welcome the club to the UPSL's Midwest Conference. Darwin Salas has a vision for the club and is continually taking steps to improve its structure and deepen its player pool along with diversifying its sponsorship support. We look forward to Des Moines United FC taking the field in 2021."

Originally created as the first futsal club in Des Moines, IA, Des Moines United FC took second place at the 2018 World Futsal Championships at ESPN Wide World of Sports in Orlando, FL. The team now will compete exclusively in the UPSL.

"The UPSL provides the perfect level of competition for us. We're the only UPSL member in Des Moines and we have credibility with central Iowa's premier players. We think that 2020 is the perfect time to bring joy and happiness to our soccer community," Des Moines United FC Owner Darwin Salas said.

Raphael Nascimento has agreed to serve as Head Coach of Des Moines United FC. Nascimento is the Men's Soccer Head Coach at Marshalltown, IA, Community College.

"Under the leadership of Raphael Nascimento, who has played in the UPSL in Florida, we are moving the team up to a more competitive level and we're excited for big things ahead," Salas said.

Des Moines United FC is an American Soccer club currently based in Des Moines, IA, and a new member of the United Premier Soccer League. Des Moines United FC will play in the UPSL's Midwest Conference.

Des Moines United FC can participate in the qualifying rounds for the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup through their affiliation and membership with the UPSL, the U.S. Soccer Federation (USSF) and the United States Adult Soccer Association (USASA).

The UPSL was formed in 2011 and currently includes more than 300 teams nationwide. The UPSL is the largest Pro Development League in North America. Each UPSL team is individually owned and operated.

UPSL teams are eligible to participate in the U.S. Open Cup Qualifying Rounds through the league's affiliation with the U.S. Soccer Federation (USSF) and the United States Adult Soccer Association (USASA).
